Should I Encourage My Child To Read Out Loud?

You should, but don’t force the issue or embarrass them by always asking them to read in front of others. It is very easy for a slight tendency for shyness to turn into ‘stage’ fright or a prolonged confidence issue.

Instead we must make sure that we provide our children with all of the necessary skills and resources, such as interactive reading apps, so that when the time does come to read to the class or a small group, they are happy and confident. The best reading apps for iPad include ‘read to me’ and ‘read by myself’ functions. Your child can practise to their hearts content and some children’s reading apps will even say individual words out loud when selected on the screen.

The more your child hears you reading aloud, the less of a stigma there will be and reading their picture books or short stories together is a great time to bond.
